Construction Commences on the North Connacht 110 kV Project

GMC Utilities Group is pleased to mark the commencement of construction works on the North Connacht 110 kV Project - an important infrastructure development that will strengthen the electricity network across Counties Mayo and Roscommon and support Ireland’s transition to a more sustainable energy future.

Supporting Regional Growth and Energy Demand

The North Connacht 110 kV Project will deliver a new circuit to the national electricity transmission network, significantly enhancing grid capacity in the region. As electricity demand continues to rise - driven by population growth, industry, and digital infrastructure - this project will ensure that homes, businesses, and communities have access to a secure and reliable power supply.

By increasing available capacity, the project will also enable future development and investment across the region, supporting long-term economic growth in Connacht.

Enabling Renewable Energy Integration

A key benefit of the project is its role in facilitating the connection of renewable energy sources to the national grid. By enabling more renewable generation, the development will contribute directly to Ireland’s Climate Action Plan targets and the broader transition to low-carbon energy.

This enhanced connectivity is essential to unlocking the region’s renewable potential and ensuring that clean energy can be efficiently transmitted to where it is needed most.

Project Overview

The project involves the installation of a new 110 kV underground cable (UGC) linking Moy 110 kV Substation in County Mayo to Tonroe 110 kV Substation in County Roscommon. Cable Length: Approximately 58.6 km Route: Predominantly along public roads Key Locations: Ballina, Church Road (L1321), N26, Swinford, and the N5.

The use of underground cable infrastructure ensures a modern, efficient, and lower-visual-impact solution while maintaining the highest standards of safety and reliability.
