GMC Utilities Group is delivering a major wastewater infrastructure upgrade in Swords, North County Dublin, on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
The project, located along Balheary Road, is a critical investment that will enable future housing delivery, improve network resilience and support sustainable community growth.
Backed by an investment of approximately €3 million, the scheme will significantly increase capacity in the local wastewater network, helping to unlock the delivery of almost 3,000 new homes in Swords while enhancing performance of existing wastewater services for homes and businesses in the area.
Wastewater infrastructure enabling new housing in North County Dublin
This wastewater network upgrade is a key enabler for residential and economic development in North County Dublin. By increasing wastewater capacity along the Balheary Road corridor, the project will reduce pressure on existing infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and ensure essential services are in place to meet current and future demand.
Investment in wastewater infrastructure is fundamental to supporting Ireland’s housing targets, and this project plays an important role in enabling sustainable development and long-term growth in the Swords area.
Collaborative delivery with Uisce Éireann and Fingal County Council
The works are being carried out by GMC Utilities Group, a leading Irish contractor specialising in water and wastewater infrastructure, on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
A portion of the scheme interfaces with Fingal County Council’s R132 Road Connectivity Project, including the upgrade of the Estuary Roundabout to a signalised junction.
Following agreement between Uisce Éireann and Fingal County Council, the eastern section of the wastewater network will be delivered by the local authority as part of the road connectivity works, ensuring a coordinated, efficient and community-focused approach.
The project includes the installation of over 360 metres of new wastewater pipeline between the Balheary Road / Castlegrange Green junction and the Estuary Roundabout, with additional works along the R125 and within Balheary Park.
Construction is scheduled for completion by summer 2026, with the Estuary Roundabout section of the works expected to conclude by the end of 2026.
Traffic management, safety and minimising disruption To ensure the safe delivery of the works, Stop/Go traffic management will be in place along Balheary Road.
Construction will be carried out in short sections to minimise disruption to residents, commuters and local businesses.
Temporary relocation of bus stops and localised footpath closures within Balheary Park will also be required, with clearly signposted alternative routes provided throughout the works.
GMC Utilities Group is committed to maintaining the highest standards of health, safety and environmental management, while working closely with stakeholders and the local community.
This project highlights GMC Utilities Group’s expertise in delivering large-scale wastewater and utilities infrastructure projects that support housing delivery, economic growth and sustainable communities.
By working in partnership with Uisce Éireann and Fingal County Council, GMC Utilities Group is helping to build resilient wastewater networks that will support Swords and the wider North County Dublin region for generations to come.
