GMC Utilities Group Supports Clean Water Projects in The Gambia and Senegal

GMC Utilities Group is proud to support two impactful clean water initiatives in The Gambia and Senegal, helping to provide sustainable access to safe drinking water for schools and rural communities.

Delivered in partnership with JOAL and charity partners WYCE, the projects are already making a meaningful difference to hundreds of people by improving access to clean water, supporting education, and strengthening local infrastructure.

Supporting Communities in Sifoe, The Gambia

The first project was completed in the village of Sifoe, The Gambia, where a new borehole and solar-powered pumping system were installed to provide reliable access to clean water. The infrastructure now supports approximately 400 students, women’s communal gardens, and the wider village community, creating long-term benefits for health, education, and daily life.

The project was officially handed over to the school headmaster and village leadership, ensuring local ownership and sustainable management for the future.

Delivering Lasting Impact in Jienounjie, Senegal

The second initiative took place in Jienounjie, a remote village in northern Casamance, Senegal, with a population of approximately 470 people. Following more than 50 years of conflict in the region, many communities continue to face limited access to education, healthcare, and essential infrastructure. The newly completed water project now supports a local school serving 100 students, a recently constructed government health clinic, and the wider community. Among the students benefiting directly are 52 boys and 38 girls, with improved access to clean water already positively impacting health, education, and everyday living conditions.

Due to difficult ground conditions in the area, the borehole was strategically drilled 200 metres away from the school to avoid saline water contamination. Community members played an important role throughout the project, assisting with trench excavation and pipe installation to connect water access to the school, clinic, and nearby football field.

The project was officially handed over on Wednesday, 11 March 2026, during a ceremony attended by the local mayor, community leaders, and representatives from the Justice and Development Organisation.

A Commitment to Sustainable Community Development

These projects demonstrate the positive impact that can be achieved when organisations, local communities, and charity partners work together to deliver practical solutions where they are needed most. By improving access to clean water, these initiatives are helping to create healthier communities, support education, and build a stronger foundation for future development.
